3rd December 2015, The Office of the Ombudsman met with Private Sector Federation (PSF) members as vital partners in the fight against corruption. The event was organized as part of the anti corruption week which started on 29th November with a theme “ Fight Corruption for a sustainable development.”

The Ombudsman urged private sector federation members to not giving their money to those who need to accumulate wealth in illegal ways “ Why do you have to put your money in holes?” Ombudsman asked. The Ombudsman showed the consequences of corruption in public procurement on the development of the country.

“If we are to succeed in the fight against corruption, we have to start with the main corruption cases we have in the country. Right now, most of the cases of corruption include, government tenders, getting jobs, promotions and gender-based corruption. If we succeed through sensitisation programmes to uproot these evils, then we are assured of achieving the development we have always wanted,”Ombudsman in her opening remarks.

The Chairperson of Private Sector Federation Mr. Gasamagera Benjamin called upon his fellow PSF members to say no to the culture of giving “something” to get a tender. He added that Private Sector Federation has come up with anti corruption policies among them the code of business ethics.

In the discussions the participants pointed out that the people who award public tenders should be sensitized too since sometimes they are the ones who ask for kick-backs and the participants showed their interests to work together with the Office of the Ombudsman in information exchanges. They also committed themselves to join hands as members so that corruption in public procurement shall be curbed.

The Anti corruption week will end on 9th December 2015 on the celebration of the International Anti Corruption Day.
